The Ganges had to be brought because Agastya Rishi drank all the water of the earth and there was no river left for the peace and sacrifice of the ancestors.

Bhagiratha, son of Maharaja Dilip, did austerities to bring Ganga to earth and one day Brahma Ji appeared pleased with his penance and asked Bhagiratha to ask for a bride, then Bhagiratha took Ganga Ji to earth with him. Talked so that he can liberate his sixty thousand ancestors. Brahma Ji said that I will send the Ganges with you, but who will bear its very rapid velocity? For this, you should take shelter of Lord Shiva, he will help you.
